True stories, personal stories, are the way to go. The Left has known this forever. Here’s a true story of interracial murder to which I was connected.
John Derbyshire passes along a story from a reader. A young man in the army gave a ride to two Negroes, which John Derbyshire warned against and for which he was fired form the National Review.
But old Derbyshire is the bad guy for writing this
(10a) Avoid concentrations of blacks not all known to you personally.
(10b) Stay out of heavily black neighborhoods.
(10c) If planning a trip to a beach or amusement park at some date, find out whether it is likely to be swamped with blacks on that date (neglect of that one got me the closest I have ever gotten to death by gunshot).
(10d) Do not attend events likely to draw a lot of blacks.
(10e) If you are at some public event at which the number of blacks suddenly swells, leave as quickly as possible.
(10f) Do not settle in a district or municipality run by black politicians.
(10g) Before voting for a black politician, scrutinize his/her character much more carefully than you would a white.
(10h) Do not act the Good Samaritan to blacks in apparent distress, e.g., on the highway.
(10i) If accosted by a strange black in the street, smile and say something polite but keep moving.
John Saletan thinks white and Asian kids should risk their lives in order to get to know individual black people better.
But if you’re going to present evidence for aggregate differences, you have to tell the rest of the story. You have to acknowledge socioeconomic status, stereotype threat, and other factors that can affect performance. And you have to remind people that drawing inferences about anyone based on race, sex, religion, or any other crude category is a lousy substitute for inspecting or interacting with that individual. If you tell people to protect themselves by avoiding interaction with the person they’re judging, you’re not just rationalizing racism. You’re perpetuating it.
“If you are white or Asian and have kids, you owe it to them to give them some version of the talk,” Derbyshire writes at the end of his piece. “It will save them a lot of time and trouble spent figuring things out for themselves.” And that, in a nutshell, is his error. If your kids don’t take the trouble to learn more about the people they meet, they’ll never outgrow your prejudices.
William Saletan the liberal scold, thinks that to end racism, white people need to take the risk to learn about individual black people. Murdered non-racist white people are the cost of the MLK’s dream:
Giovanne Johnson, 19, and Rakeem Jones, 18, are both charged with first-degree premeditated murder, felony murder and aggravated robbery in connection with the shooting death of Taylor Hotzoglou, 22, who was killed on April 28, 2012, after giving Johnson and Jones a ride. Hotzoglou was found by a passerby dead in his car on the shoulder of Victory Road. He had been shot six times in the back and face.
Too bad Taylor. Your life was just paying the cost of MLK’s dream. We must pay and pay and pay, because William Saletan and other liberals don’t mind us dying for their ideals.
