Disturbing Wedding Trend: Getting Married at a Plantation
Are we forgetting that plantations were the sites of enslavement and brutality?

“12 Years a Slave,” which takes viewers into the deep interior of a plantation, may be a Golden Globe-nominated film of searing depth – but for some, it’s a wedding backdrop.
Plantation weddings aren’t anything new (and as Ani DiFranco showed, plantations can be sites for other misguided events as well). But with the popularity of Pinterest, the visual of heterosexual, primarily white couples exchanging kisses on plantation grounds is being neatly folded into the virtual “romantic” wedding aesthetic. A simple visit to the open “wedding” boards can yield a pin or two of large white columns and an extensive bridal party lined up at various plantations around the country, sandwiched between pins of classic three-tiered wedding cakes and fluffy wedding dresses on hangers.
Many of the wedding-venue plantations currently floating around Pinterest have a pronounced history of slavery – which is reduced to a mere line or two in the “history” on some websites.
The Wye plantation was settled in the 1650s by a Welsh Puritan and wealthy planter, Edward Lloyd. During its peak, the plantation surrounding the house encompassed 42,000 acres (17,000 ha) and housed over 1,000 slaves.
It’s interesting what they came up with — pride is what is needed in survival.
And there were 10 Israelis, 10 Americans, and a whole group of scholars. And the scholars had distilled the essence of survival, they studied Gibbon and Spengler, et cetera. And they analyzed why was it that the Roman, the Greek, and the Incan civilizations all passed on and the Jewish civilization survived? And out of their distillation came the idea that the difference between all these great civilizations was that after a great trauma or defeat, the Romans got up and said, “I don’t want to be a Roman.” The Greeks got up and said, “Hell, I don’t want to be a Greek.” The Incas ran all over the place. But the Jews, after every tragedy, brushed themselves off and said, “I want to be Jewish!”
So Abe Foxman, who is speaking above, wants white children to be saying, “I don’t want to be white,” so we go extinct.
We are the people who brush ourselves off, and say, I want to be White!
We’re going to make it, people.
