I am an economy and finance watcher, kind of like a sports fan who follows the Federal Reserve instead of the NFL/NBA/MLB. Peter Schiff, Chris Martenson, KMO, James Howard Kunstler, Marc Faber, and Gonzalo Lira are among the commentators I watch and read.
I also take the temperature of people in my community, and I can see that only Keynesian stimulus keeps this community afloat and paying its bills. There is some manufacturing and some farming, but it’s only a small fraction of the local economy.
It’s all but impossible to know what exactly is going on in the heads of the USA hostile elites, but their restless military adventurism in the Middle East, and now in Ukraine and the attempt to encircle Russia, appears to be some kind of end game gambit — a desperate move for some reason or other.
It appears that USA is running out of time for something; the clock is running out. Meanwhile Russia is chugging along just fine. This is why Russia didn’t jump into war in Ukraine immediately. Russia is ahead on points, and Putin seems to want to let the clock run out. The USA will be too preoccupied with it’s own economic problems to fight a war, goes Putin’s reasoning.
Of course economic problems are the reason to go to war, by Neocon logic.
It’s gardening season again, and I’m planting potatoes and peas and beets and cabbage so far. I like using empty boxes from liquor stores as planters.
The great thing about this is that it is modular. Your garden is as big as your rows of boxes. You can do it right on top of lawn without attacking the sod. You can grow peppers, tomatoes, potatoes, whatever, right out of the cardboard planter boxes. During the fall, collect leaves, and if you can get manure delivered to your house (see Craigslist), you can make your own soil by putting manure on top of the leaf pile and letting it cook for several months. So no buying anything, except maybe manure delivery.
However bad things get economically, if you are producing something of value to people, you won’t be lost. If you grow food and/or raise livestock, you have left the Cargo Cult and got started on the Future. Same if you work at a microbrewery. Or, if you are a woman who is good with children, start a day care where the kids don’t watch TV and only eat organic, real food, no grains, no GMO’s.
As I’ve said before, if you are reading this blog from mom’s basement, go live in Portland, Oregon, or Eugene, Oregon, or Seattle, WA, and report back via the comments.
Go work in a microbrewery and get a plot in a community garden or work at a CSA farm, live in a rooming house as cheaply as possible or at the farm, and take up wing chun kung fu:
The urban hippies are doing the stuff in Portland and Eugene that you need to get involved in, if you aren’t fully engaged in life right now. And study wing chun — it will be a good thing to have in the collapse. It might not be possible to go study kung fu in the collapse. It only takes a few years to get wing chun for life; you can always teach it to others.
