Julie appears to have first heard the phrase “check your privilege” from Time magazine. The kind of people I run into who have had a few drinks and are ready to talk candidly, have heard this phrase from the mainstream media and fly into a rage at it. Tm Wse will never persuade such people to have any but an enraged reaction at such a phrase.
Let’s just say it wasn’t very well test marketed. If WN’s wanted to troll the general public by thinking of a good phrase and pretending to be anti-racists, we couldn’t think of one as good as “Check your privilege.” Only the hothouse environment of a college campus could come up with something so tone deaf and insulting.
We used to highly value getting any talking points of ours in the mainstream media. We thought, “If only the mainstream media would broadcast our viewpoints, the public would come to our side.” I kind of gave up on that idea myself.
Since the rise of social media and the fall of mass media, I think everyone cares less.
But still, it’s interesting to see that a Mainstream Media outlet like Time Magazine set off this Julie Borowski. I didn’t detect any sense that she reads blogs. She comes across as a mostly mass media minded person, that is to say, doesn’t go real deep into the issues like we do.
These days, one can tell people who read WN and conspiracy blogs and/or forums by their choice of words. We are developing our own private language and shibboleths, such as “hide your Barbarian face in the presence of the hostile elites.” Julie Borowski would have no idea what that means.
Edit; Julie Borowski is a pretty cool libertarian with 48,710 subscribers. Some people think that such people suck the oxygen out of WN; I think they create a populace of people who are closer to our ideas.
